In 2006 Denis Shapovalov organized a competition for the young Russian composers "CelloVek". The word "Cellovek" in Russian means "a man", dividing into 2 parts the same word  "Cellovek" means "a century of cello". The contest has two main goals: to enrich cello repetoire and to give a chance to the young composers to show their talents.

This initiative was supported by the Moscow State Conservatory and "Russian Performing Art" Charity Foundation. Authors had to present concert pieces for cello and piano.

The final round took place at the Rachmaninov Hall of the Moscow Conservatory on February, 8, 2007. Denis Shapovalov together with the pianist Alexander Vershinin performed all the 11 works of the composers-finalists. The jury which consisted of the famous Russian musicians announced the winners:

I prize - Svetlana Fomina (Moscow), piece "In dreams" 

Denis Shapovalov's special prize - Andrey Molchanov (Novossybirsk), piece "Fantastic dance"

"Russian Performing Art" Charity Foundation's prize - Eva Dominyak (Perm), "When it's raining outside" 

A CD with the pieces-finalists will be released in 2008.
